ZigZagZuid

23 - 25 June 2017

Zuidplein is an unique cityscape with a large-scale shopping center, theatre, swimming pool, concert and event halls, but also a neighbourhood in which the inhabitants are living relatively isolated. From the start Zuidplein was meant to be a progressive and future oriented project, a true example of a hub, that knows no equals in Rotterdam and surroundings. Cars, bikes, metros, buses, commuters and shoppers come and go here on a daily basis. At the moment the area finds itself on the brink of a large transformation into ‘Hart van Zuid’. ZigZagCity explored the urban area for three days with an intensive program of tours, exhibitions, films, workshops and performances.

The central location was the art-installation by Team Skywalkers, situated close to the fly-over and providing new views over the surroundings. In the heart of the pavilion ZigZagTravel, the travel agency by Postmodern, offered tours that run crisscross through the area, its buildings and the most hidden gems. 'Gang van Zaken', a film project by Marcel IJzerman was on a non-stop show the whole weekend at the top level of the pavilion. The film, that Marcel made especially for ZigZagZuid, showed the daily dynamics of the mall, the theatre, the tube station and the swimming pool around current Zuidplein. During the festival also a newspaper was presented, the result of an one-day workshop by Fabian Saul and Grashina Gabelmann, the editors of the Flaneur Magazine. Furthermore there were workshops for children, film screenings in the swimming pool and a special poem about Zuidplein by spoken word artist M.
